“Will last week’s cold snap and snow hurt this year’s cherry blossoms?” The National Park Service initially projected the peak cherry blossom bloom date for the DC area as the last week of March, however as temperatures took an unexpected drop combined with snow that date has been changed to the first week of April. For the past ten years the Town of Buchanan’s bloom date has followed the National Park Service’s projections so the Town uses the Park Service projections as a guide for the Town’s bloom date.
This year’s projected peak bloom period should provide the perfect backdrop for the Town of Buchanan’s annual Arbor Day Celebration scheduled for Friday, April 5th at 11:00 a.m. on the Buchanan Town Park at 485 Lowe Street.
This year’s Arbor day Celebration will feature representatives from the Town, County and State. Paul Revell Urban Forestry Coordinator for the VA Department of Forestry will travel from Charlottesville to recognize the Town with a 2013 Tree City USA Certification while Dennis McCarthy Assistant Regional Forester from Salem and Joe Boswell Area Forester are supplying the Town with 400 Virginia Pines for students at Buchanan Elementary School.
This year’s Arbor Day Donors Plaque has been donated by the Frame Shop & Gallery of Buchanan Virginia. The Donors Plaque which contains the list of donors who have given money along with the memorials will be unveiled as the highlight of the afternoon’s activities. Following the program the Plaque will be placed on display in the Town Hall.
The Town of Buchanan has received numerous donations from families and individuals to go towards the purchase of trees to be planted on the Town Park. The Town has also received a generous gift of $1,600.00 from Valley Beautiful and expect Arbor Day Chair Carol Underwood and several members of the organization to be present to help unveil this year’s Arbor Day Donors Plaque.
Following the presentation guests are invited to join in a commemorative planting which will result in more than twenty trees being planted on the Buchanan Town Park. Plantings for this year include a mix of hardwood and ornamental flowering trees. Sugar Maples, Hornbeams and Honey Locusts will be planted to provide welcoming shade to the heat of summer as well as a blaze of fall colors. These trees will be supplemented with a planting of Dogwoods, Crab Apples and Cherry Trees which will be sure to add to Buchanan’s spring flurry of flowers.
The tree planting will be followed with light refreshments supplied by members of the Buchanan Special Events Committee and Buchanan Town Improvement Society.
We hope that your schedule will permit you to attend this year’s event , we look forward to your participation. If you wish to make a donation, contact the Buchanan Downtown Revitalization Program at 540-254-1212.
